Making flashcards by hand takes hours, and you end up drilling what you already know. DAFi generates flashcards from your own course notes, focused on the concepts you got wrong in your quizzes.
DAFi generates flashcards from your own lecture notes, and aims them at your weak spots. Instead of a deck of 200 cards covering everything, you get cards for the concepts a quiz showed you haven't mastered yet. You review them with a swipe, and the next quiz tells you whether it worked.
How it works
- Create a note. Record a lecture or import your documents; see smart note-taking.
- Take the calibration quiz. The first quiz on a note measures where you stand, concept by concept. Flashcards for a note unlock once this first quiz is done.
- Open your revision sheet. After each quiz, DAFi generates a revision sheet with your revision priorities: the concepts you need to work on.
- Tap "Revise". Each priority has a Revise button that launches flashcards on that concept.
- Review. Flip the card, then swipe or tap Know or To review. On the web, the arrow keys sort the card (→ know, ← to review) and Space or Enter flips it. A Learn more explanation is there when the answer alone isn't enough.
- Check the recap. At the end, each card is marked Understood or To revise, so you know what to come back to.
Why targeted flashcards
Flashcards work because they force you to retrieve the answer instead of rereading it. That's active recall, one of the best-supported study techniques; see why it works. The weak point of flashcards is usually the deck itself: building it takes time, and a big deck spreads your effort evenly, even over what you already know.
DAFi skips both problems. The cards come from your own course material, and they're chosen from the concepts your quiz results flagged. Your review time goes where it's most useful.
Who it's for
Inès is in nursing and has a pharmacology exam with dozens of drug classes to know. After her calibration quiz, her revision sheet flags three classes she keeps mixing up. She reviews the flashcards for those three on the bus, then retakes the next quiz level to check.
Julien, in economics, doesn't have time to make cards for every chapter. He lets the quizzes decide: he only reviews the flashcards DAFi generates for the concepts he missed.
Tips
- Say "To review" honestly. A card you half-knew is a card to review.
- Use Learn more on every card you miss: understanding why beats memorizing the answer.
- Alternate: quiz, flashcards, next quiz level. The tailored revision loop is built for that.
- Space your sessions out over several days before the exam; the method is explained in our guide to spaced repetition.
Frequently asked questions
Can I create or edit my own cards?
No. DAFi generates the cards from your notes and your quiz results. It's designed to save you the work of building a deck.
Does DAFi schedule reviews with spaced repetition?
Not automatically. DAFi doesn't run a spaced-repetition scheduler like dedicated flashcard apps. It decides what to review from your quiz results; you decide when, and your progress tracking shows which concepts still need work.
Why are my flashcards locked?
Flashcards unlock after the first calibration quiz on a note, because they're built from what that quiz reveals.
Can I use them on my phone?
Yes. Flashcards work on iPhone, iPad and on the web.
Take a quiz on your latest note, and let your mistakes decide what goes on your flashcards.
